Jacob Crane Foundation partners with LATCH to provide vital support for families facing Childhood Cancer

Starting this November, the Jacob Crane Foundation is making a regular contribution to LATCH Welsh Children’s Cancer Charity, to support financial grants for families in Wales with children undergoing cancer treatment.

The Jacob Crane Foundation, established in memory of 17-year-old Jacob Crane—who passed away in May 2024 from acute myeloid leukaemia (AML)—has partnered with LATCH Welsh Children’s Cancer Charity to support grants offered to families. For over 40 years, LATCH has provided bespoke assistance to families affected by childhood cancer, offering on-site family accommodation at the Children’s Hospital for Wales, a dedicated social work team, financial assistance, and memory-making activities, such as cinema outings, Build-A-Bear visits, and on-ward entertainment for the entire family.

Research conducted in 2023 by Young Lives vs Cancer underscores the financial toll childhood cancer takes on families. Their study found that families face nearly £700 in extra monthly expenses, often referred to as the “cancer premium.” With travel alone averaging £250 per month, many parents find themselves grappling with unexpected costs while balancing work and caregiving responsibilities. Additionally, many families must reduce work hours or take unpaid leave to provide care, further straining their finances.

In 2023, LATCH issued more than £400,000 in financial grants, including money to help families with costs related to accessing cancer treatment such as expenses associated with frequent travel to hospital appointments and stays away from home. For many families, this assistance is vital, allowing them to remain close to their child during treatment and offering some relief from financial pressures. Jacob’s father expressed the Foundation’s commitment to supporting families in similar situations, saying, “When Jacob was first diagnosed, the support we received made a significant difference. By supporting LATCH, we hope to give back and ensure that other families have the help they need to focus on their children.”

Jacob’s Story and the Foundation’s Mission

Jacob Crane’s experience with AML began with symptoms that led to his diagnosis in 2022. Known for his kindness, sense of humour, and love for sports, Jacob was a cherished member of his community and an active player in local rugby, football, and cricket teams.

After undergoing a stem cell transplant and showing early signs of improvement, Jacob’s condition took a turn. In May 2024, he passed away, leaving behind family and friends committed to honouring his memory.

Determined to make a positive impact in Jacob’s name, his family created the Jacob Crane Foundation. The Foundation aims to support families with children undergoing cancer treatment and raise awareness of childhood cancers. “Jacob’s strength and kindness continue to inspire us,” his father shared. “We wanted to carry his spirit forward by helping other families who are going through similar challenges. Supporting LATCH is one way we can make a difference.”

By contributing to LATCH’s grants programme, the Jacob Crane Foundation will help ensure that financial assistance remains accessible to families in need across Wales. This partnership honours Jacob’s memory by giving other families the support they need.

Jacob’s father concluded, “We are honoured to support LATCH. Our hope is that other families will feel the same compassion and stability that we felt during Jacob’s experience. Through this partnership, Jacob’s legacy will continue, bringing support and hope to families who need it.”
